Pages File Converter
The client sent a .pages file. Here is how to open it on Windows.
What it does
More clients are sending .pages files: Apple Pages is free on every iPhone and Mac, and most people have no idea that what they attached is a format Windows and Android cannot open. Word will not read it, and asking the client to resend costs a day.
The usual advice is to rename the file to .zip and open the PDF inside it. That only worked for files from Pages 2009 and earlier. Since 2013 a .pages file holds Apple’s own compressed data and a picture of page one, with no PDF anywhere, which is why that trick and most free converters fail on the files clients send today.
This tool reads Apple’s format directly, in your browser. Drop the file in, read it on screen, and save it as a Word document, plain text or a PDF. It makes zero network requests after the page loads, so client documents never leave your computer, which you can confirm in your own browser’s developer tools.
What it converts
- All the text, in order, with titles and headings carried over as real Word headings
- Tables, cell by cell, including amounts as exact decimals and dates
- Headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes, gathered at the end so nothing is silently dropped
- Older Pages 2009 files, using the PDF those files carry when it is there
- A ready-to-send message asking the client to export a PDF or Word copy next time
How it works
- 01
Drop one or more .pages files onto the page. They are read by your browser only.
- 02
Read the document on screen, next to a picture of page one for checking layout.
- 03
Download it as Word (.docx) or text, or save it as a PDF.
